Paul Vincent Smith learns that a drought has dried out a creek in the town where he grew up. He flashes back twenty years to a fling with a young woman; when he learned she was pregnant and expecting him to marry her, he murdered her and sank her body in the creek.

Fearing that the body will be found, he returns and, in the dead of night, begins digging in the creek, but doesn't find it. He is interrupted by the police and taken into custody. He gives in to the desire to rid himself of the burden he's been carrying and makes a full confession.

Although skeptical, the police decide to dig further. They don't find the body either. But there's a twist...
